(Batu Golog) The Story of Golog Stone--A Folktale from West Nusa Tenggara



Formerly in the area near the river of Sawing called Padamara in West Nusa Tenggara there was a poor family. The husband named Amaq Lembain, and the wife was named Inaq Lembain.

Their livelihoods are agricultural laborers. Every day they walk to the village to offers service to pound rice.

When pounding rice, Inaq Lembain always come with her two children. One day, when she was pounding rice, she put her children on a flat rock near the place where she was working.

Surprisingly, when Inaq Lembain began pounding,the stone that her children sat on it grew bigger. Feel like moved, the eldest son called his mother, "Mother, this rock become bigger and bigger.” Unfortunately Inaq Lembain remain do her work. She just replied, "My son, just wait a minute.” And she continue pounding.

That is happened many time. The flat stone was increasingly rising higher than a coconut tree. The younger child then cried uncontrollably. However, Inaq Lembain remain continue pounding and winnowing rice. Children's voice grew faint. Finally, the voice was not heard again.

The stone of Golog was higher and higher, and bring the children until can reach the clouds. They were crying uncontrollably. Finally, when Inaq Lembain finished pounding and winnowing rice, she was realized and shocked because her children are gone and she could not find her childrens. They were taken up by the Stone of Golog.

Then she cried and prayed to God. She wanted to bring her children down, but she did not know how. Evantually, God response her pray. She had to use the rice pounder to cut down the Golog stone. Then, she strike the stone with the rice pounder. Amazingly, the stone broken down into three pieces. The first part fell in an area which later was called Gembong Village for causing the ground vibrate there. The second part fell in area which was later named Dasan Batu because there are peoples who watched the fall of the stone. And the last part fell in area which later was named Montong Teker for causing a roar.


Unfortunately, the childerns did not fall to earth. They had been turned into two birds. The eldest son turned into a Kekuwo bird and the younger turned into a Kelik bird. They  could not come back to their mother. They had changed into birds. The two birds were not able to incubate their eggs, because both are derived from humans.

Moral value :
1. The parents must take care their children when they work.
2. We may not ignore other people say. 
3. Hard working will make us closer with the success.
4. Carelessness in doing something will make us feels regret in the future.
