Turtles (testudines) are reptiles in the ordo of Cheloni. Turtles inhabit marine, fresh water, and brackish water, through out the temperate and tropical regions of the world. The first turtles appeared more than 220 million years ago during the late Triassic Period. Since that time, turtles have changed little and it is quite possible that modern turles closely resemble those that roamed the earth during the time of dinosaurs.
Turtles hatch from eggs. The female lay their eggs on land. They dig a hole in the ground, lay their eggs in the hole, and then cover them with soil. The mothers than go away. The sun's warmth hatches the eggs. Female turtles hatch from the warmer eggs on top. Males from the deepest and coolest eggs in the nest. When they are about 40 years old, they will come back to the same beach to mate and lay their eggs. Some turtles can live to be over 100 years old.
